shallow handy box

working today someone told me that the nec states that you can not use a shallow handy box anymore,,, is that true?
 
A 3"?2"?1?" handy box is good for three # 14's. If you want to take a 14/2 there and cap it off, thats fine. Add 2 more 14's for the device and your .....

I've never found much use for regular handy boxes. I don't even buy them. I do go through a few cases of 2-1/8" deep handy boxes in a year's time, however.
 
I've seen the very shallow boxes installed inside a vertical extruded aluminum post (dividing/supporting) a prefab wall, on a prefab type building. Only a 12-2 wg was passed into the extrusion for a single duplex receptical. Really no 'volume' room for anything else, not even a bend in the wire!
