Shallow Wall

I just looked at a job this morning that involves installing a couple of receptacles in a newly studded wall. For some reason, the framer decided to use 2x2s instead of 2x4s, so the wall is very shallow. The framing is up against a cinder block foundation.

I've never tried to install recessed boxes in such a shallow wall. Is it even feasible/legal to try (I'm thinking shallow 1900 box with a mud ring), or should I just go with Wiremold? HO is open to either idea.

A standard 1900 box is 1.5" deep. It should fit in the 2X2 wall. If not someone makes a 1.25" deep 1900 box. Can't remember which company that is. Personally if I'm the owner, I don't want wiremold on a new wall.

Had the same scenario recently. I used shallow plastic 1900 with a mud ring and it worked fine with enough space to wire what I needed it for.

They make boxes for this type of installation. They're shallow, and they go off to one side for your cubic inches. You're not allowed to splice, from what I remember. I couldn't find one on the web, but I did alter the drawing of a single gang nail on to show what they look like. Ask your supplier, hopefully the can steer you in the right direction.

There was already a standard 1900 box installed nearby, so we checked it with a piece of wood. It was very close, but the box protruded just a little bit. Add the mud ring, and it would protrude a bit too much.

I was thinking a 4x4x1-1/4" box would be ideal. The space is half of a rental duplex, and the owner doesn't care if Wiremold is installed. I don't really like Wiremold, either, but I'll install it if the HO wants it.

If you use 1/4 " mudrings on your 1900 they won't stick out too far.

I use a 1-1/4" deep 4 square face nail grey plastic box made by P & S with a matching plaster ring, it fits perfect.
Of course only for RX.

The Raco 185 is the 1?" 4-square. Works great with a regular plaster ring. Has 18 cubes plus the ring's.

Thanks AL. I couldn't remember which company made the 1.25" deep boxes but I know that I had used them in the past. I would use these with the appropriate depth mud ring.

The boxes Jim W talked about.Work great and since non metallic they dont need a ground tail. They come with a bracket for mounting. Also are pretty cheap to purchase.I`ve used them alot in townhomes with block walls and a double furring.
