I'm installing a 120v recessed light fixture with a rated shower trim and gasket
in a residential bathroom shower stall, does this fixture need gfi protection and if it does can you give me the code section

only if the manufacturer requires it. A normal 6" halo with shower trim is fine.
However, most house I do, if there's a fan or light in the shower, I GFI protect the entire circuit

I agree and will add that a fan or fan/light installed over a shower will generally require GFCI protection from the manufacturers specs not the NEC.
