Hey guys I have a mess of a job on my hands . Last guy burned up the shunt trip on an old KAL Square D breaker. So the shunt trip feeds a 225A sub panel that feeds the grills and other items to be turned off during an emergency. I Have not been able to locate the signal wire as of yet but its definitely not coming out of the sub panel being served from the shunt trip breaker but the neutral is forsure. Is it good practice to come out of the panel the shunt trips feeds with the signal feed to the shunt?
My new breaker is a powerpact j frame with mx shunt which is rated for continous duty , so I guess im not concerned with burning up the coil as much as best practice.
Side note this KAL breaker was installed in a Square D I-Line i have not been able to take dead front off yet as its massive but I'm wondering how the heck they modified this KAL which has lugs on both sides to fit the I-Line bus. Was this a common work around for whatever reason way back when?

If this is an I-Line panel, it must use the plug on version KA as a branch breaker.

If this is a custom panel, a separately mounted sub-feed, and old ML panel, or the main in a panel board, it would use a KAL breaker. In this case a new PowerPact breaker may not be dimensionally the same.

In the old days the I-Line breakers had fewer digits in their part numbers than the newer PowerPact devices that have the third digit of "A" for plug-on mounting.

I was qouted a JGA36225SA 3p 225 A as a replacment for this I-Line. I was told this is the new replacment for the KA
Yes it is.
I always thought it weird the I-Line panel version dropped a digit from the original breaker part numbering format. But that happened back in the 60's, and I never researched why.

Do you have any clue how they would have modified the KAL a lug in lug out breaker , to fit the I-Line ? I'm just hoping not to see something nasty inside. I have a spot above the existing breaker to use if I have to A.I.P.
