Shunt Trip

Need to find the New Code, If more than on business is already under one roof is a new business required to have a shunt trip that shuts everything in all business under that roof off. Is their a Grandfather clause to existing business

Thanks , But The City am in is requiring all new business to have an shunt trip for that business and now saying if under one roof ,their has to be a main trip for the hole complex at one time NEC 2020

Like Don said, there is no NEC requirement. Its an admendment to the NEC, that you will have to comply with. Get a copy of your local rules, they can be more important than the NEC.

You can't find it in the NEC because the NEC does not require that. You need to look to your local rules, if they differ from the NEC.

(1) A manually operable switch or circuit breaker equipped with a handle or other suitable operating means.

(2) A power-operated switch or circuit breaker, provided the switch or circuit breaker can be opened by hand in the event of power supply failure.

Obviously, the jurisdiction where you are working, having mandated option number (2)

As advised, check the local ordinance.

But nothing there triggers a need for a single device to operate all service disconnects. A building is permitted to have multiple service disconnect.

I read the poster as saying there is a requirement for a single device that will disconnect all power to the building and there is no such requirement in the NEC.

Easy enough to do though, bring all the shuntrip wires back to one point, multiple contact blocks on one operator. As others said, must be a local code, or one of those “because I said so” inspectors.
