Re: Shunt

The shunt trip feature enables a circuit breaker to be "tripped" by the operation of an external sensor, instead of, and sometimes in addition to, the normal "series" integral thermal and magnetic trip units.

The external sensors can be any type that can initiate a contact closure, such as overcurrent, ground fault, undervoltage, phase loss, etc.

A small solenoid built into the breaker mechanically unlatches the main contacts when supplied with voltage from the external control voltage source. This control voltage is often taken from an emergency power source so that the breaker can be operated manually in the event of main power failure.
