I was asked from an concerned Father if the Smart Meter is harmful to anyone nearby? Talk of "Radio waves" emitted from the Meter near his son's Bed has him considering buying some advertised $400 "shield" to prevent radio waves from the Smart Meter from becoming a danger, or moving his son's bedroom.... Love to hear the reality of these Smart Meters... Thanks!

Their radio waves are much less of threat than those of a cell phone that you hold next to your brain.

My belief --- no problem.

Typical transmission time is once a day sometime after midnight for not a great number of seconds. Time duration will be a function of where you are in the mesh network.

Power density is not very high. Assume a transmit power of 1 W and an isotropic radiator, then at a 1 foot radius the power density is 0.08 W/sq-foot, and 0.000,6 W/sq-in. The power density drops off by the inverse of the radius squared. At a 5 foot radius the power density is 1/25 of that at 1 foot.

If you put 0.08 W into a 1/2 W carbon composition resistor you probably could barely detect a temperatutre rise on the resistor surface.

Doubtful that there is any other effect on the human body other than heat, and this will be minscule at even 1 foot from the smart meter with no shielding, and only for a few seconds duration per day. I have not yet measured the duration of transmission from my meter. I have no priority for this.

I have been in the radiation field close up to 1000 W transmitters. Also within 10 to 200 ft of a 50,000 W transmitter RF stage or antenna. No known harm. These were not many days of total exposure. But these power levels and duration were vastly higher than one's exposure to a smart meter.

There are many people who are into this new wave of electromagnetic field's and radio waves. In the last 3 weeks I have had 3 calls in relation to electromagnetic field's but everyone of them has been to the internet and own their own gaussmeters. Unfortunately they all seem to have the triaxial meter but do not understand how to use it.

Anyway there are a few lawsuits against the utilities to get those meters removed. Not sure what the outcome was or will be...

I think the answer is that yes there are waves radiated from the meter but those waves are so miniscule that they are negligible relative to other waves which are already present and have been since the creation of our solar system.

There are two reasons people will hype the issue:
To get your money by selling you some test equipment which may even be hacked so you consider buying the "more expensive model", or,
Because they really believe the story and rebroadcast what they hear just like they do with contrails, aliens in their head, etc.

Unless or until an OBJECTIVE and CREDIBLE source ever says there is something to worry about, there's nothing to worry about. If there really was a problem, every academic institution in the country would be doing research and publishing their findings.

I'm convinced there's nothing there.

There is a very long and occasionally contentious thread on this subject already in here.

My wife has an acquaintance who is 100% convinced that RF emissions from her smart meter have caused her irreparable brain damage and she has been searching for a lawyer to take on the utility. No takers yet, at least none that do not demand payment up front. She claims that she can tell when driving through a neighborhood whether or not they have smart meters yet simply by the feelings she gets in her head. Before we had ours installed, she was at the house, asking me to help her (again), and I told her I had one in my shop outside to experiment with, so I was going to go "turn it on" and take some measurements with her to see what she might be picking up. What I actually turned on was a VFD I had out there, hooked up to a small motor with unshielded SO cord, which if you aren't aware, creates a somewhat powerful local radio transmitter that you can pick up if you can mess with an old analog tuner. So I used that to confirm that the VFD was on and emitting, but told her it was off, then swapped it so that she thought it was on when it was in fact off. Then to prove to my wife what a nut case she was, I mixed it up several times, sometimes it was on when I said it was, sometimes not. She believed what I told her the status was 100% of the time, not what the reality was. Being I already know that trying to talk sense to people who have already formed a relious-like opinion of a scientific issue is pointless, I never revealed to her that I was messing with her, that was mainly to get my wife off my back about trying to help her prove her case. Since the smart meter was installed here at the house a year or so ago, she refuses to visit now.

So my personal opinion is that these are not only harmless, but are actually beneficial in pest deterrence!

Should have given her a tinfoil hat.....

Don_r...very well put.
Also what Gar has said is noteworthy and what we need is both Sober and intelligent persons getting together on the matter and finding a way to stop cold whats gone wrong with the entire affair. A very tall order because of the dollars involved.

There is a recent report of a kid who was sleeping with his cell phone under his pillow, who is now dead. There are a large number of major problems brewing as a result of this Tek because its definitely quite a bit more dangerous that what we have been led to believe and there is quite a bit of credible science to substantiate this which has been suppressed 6 ways to Sunday.

The fact is we are living in a Frequency polluted world and a major portion of the Technology is Toxic. The Microwaves being a major problem that has been swept under the rug for too long. Even the fact that the general population of the USA think microwave food is safe and unaltered indicates how gullible the masses are.

The western population is ignorant on the whole and addicted to their gadgets, most of which we can do better without.
The highly intelligent persons involved with Technical fields etc. need to start getting more educated in the entire picture before they assume they have all the facts. There are a large number of advanced minds that have done the research on these matters and they are not being respected or listened to until now. The truth will eventually break out into the open light of day.

There is a very large amount of good that could be done if people would join with each other in spite of the monetary forces that are always seeking to run everything. The facts of what is moving not only this technology but many other things forward that are not in the peoples best interests need to be faced by people willing to tell the truth no matter what the cost. All toxic and unsustainable paradigms have to be undone or we will be facing insurmountable problems to future generations.

The is a very large difference between administration and control.

It is not up to anyone to decide what I am better off with or without.

As far as the rest I will gladly live today with all my gadgets while at the same time enjoying the longest predicted life span in human history.

I don't know if you can hear it through your screen but there is some applause coming towards you from here in the Rockies.

Even if it's true (cite a reference?) it proves nothing. There are a lot of folks who don't sleep with a cell phone under their pillow who are also dead.

I wonder how many of these 'worry warts' use their smartphone, while standing in front of the microwave oven, to check the wireless camera in their child's room.
