I saw an interesting primary (12,500) cable repair today. The primary cable had a manufacturing defect, due to the type of water used when it was made some 20+ years ago. the cable is failing, one section had 3 failures in 15 feet-its direct buried.
The POCO installed special elbows with tube fittings on each end of the cable. After purging with nitrogen, then put a pump on one end, and a vacuum on the other, the pump would pump in a silcon liquid into the cable stranded core. They fill the cable with the power off, then energize it and leave the vacuum on to pull more liquid through for 60 days.
They say it restores the cable to 300% better than orginal insulation. Its called Silicon Cable Injection.
The cables are up to 500 feet long.

Tom, I don't remember when I first heard of the repair method but it is close to ten years old. :D
