I was shopping at the new Super Wal Mart in my area today (yeah, I know, they're evil) and I noticed that all the lights were off and that the store was brightly lit from just the skylights.

Now, this may be a nightmare for roof leaks down the road, but I thought it was such a simple way to light a store and save energy. Sometimes the simple approach is the best!

I'm guessing the savings are substantial considering there are several thousand feet of 4' T-8 lamps.

peter,

outside of shopping at wal-mart, i agree with you :D

we are seeing, and i'm sure you are too, a ton of computerized lighting control systems. there is big money in saving energy...

Here in CA skylights are being mandated by the CA Energy Code. Size and use of the building are what set it off, but yes a very effective energy saver.

I was visiting a home, in the northern part of my state, they had the sun capture lighting, in the kitchen bathrooms, and hallways, they said their electrician installed them, it appears there are sun catchers with night lighting built in the same unit.

Just read in Electrical Contractor that behind the Federal Government, Wal Mart is the largest user of electrical power in the country. They are into a new energy saving initiative that includes what Peter mentioned. Lots of skylights, doors on the meat coolers, etc.

I'll shop anywhere, could not care any less about "evil" they may be. It is what makes the U.S. what it is for better or worse. I'd say for better. :)

it's not that wal-mart is "evil" - look up capitalism and it defines wal-mart...

it's just that most everything in that store is made like crap...

At another Super WalMart that I went to in New York state, they used some type of dimming system where the rows of lights went to half brightness.

I'm guessing my local one has the same type of system, but since it was very sunny today the lights did not need to be on at all.

I did see this store while it was under construction and the lights have a 6 or 8 wire harness in them. I figured it was for the dimming system.

Right now I am experiencing a large festering boil in regards to one of these sysyems and the owners....more on that later....
