Simple question for a new teacher

This is my first year as a Industrial Technology Teacher, and I was wondering is there a specific height to place outlet boxes? I'm getting ready to teach a short unit on basic wiring. Thank you for any help.

:) There are no specs. for res outlet boxes. Example: Clock ckt. Those boxes are near the ceiling. I usually place my recep. 9"-12" from the floor to the bottom of the box. I place my switches 48"-50" from the floor to the botom of the box. There are other applications that you have to be aware of such as countertop placement and bathroom placement.

I have ran wiring and hooked up light switches and plugs. The only thing that I have not done is hook all that up in a service box. I'm only going to teach them the basics of this unit.Though thank you for all your help.

Re: Simple question for a new teacher

As a youg boy I lived on a farm. My older sister who is 75 now, told me about how I usually had power off from blowing fuses in my experiments.

I don't remember much about this. Now, I know I should have had some basic training in safety around electricity. I found out the hard way.

A basic course in electrical work should start with instructions on safely working the systems, before any instructions regarding the mechanics of the installation.

You are in a position to make a difference.

I think the present ADA requirements are a max center height of 42 and a min. height of 18 in on center based on the final regulations for ADA federal register title III 28 CFR part 36

Again, Thank you for your help and I understand that safety is such a big topic when regarding electricity. I will do my best to teach them everything that I know and to reasure you about that, I have lined up a licensed electrician to be a guest speaker.

Re: Simple question for a new teacher

Just something to consider.

It would be good design to install receptacle outlets in non-dwellings at least 18" above grade. This prevents relocation and reclassification issues if the room changes its own classification to a hazardous location.

Many design specs and common practice places switch outlet locations at 48" above grade. It is a better design to place these outlets boxes at 52" or 44" to avoid the drywall taped joint. This prevents boxes from being at a weak point in the construction of the wall and helps to reduce mud fill and wall damage. :)

mdfriend: Wiring Simplified is a old and still updated text. I have seen it at Lowes for about $10.00. This text is very good, and there is a expanded version for about $40.00. Actually Wiring Simplified would be a good student text.

if your going to teach and have to ask questions like this, the class is in trouble. buy a code book and do YOUR homework.
