Just wondering if someone could tell me difference in what 210.4 (b) and what 240.15 (b) (1) is . Just trying to interrupt when I could have a multiwire branch circuit without handle ties.

Thanks

240.15(B)(a) applies if the breaker opens via manual or manual operation (meaning, it opens all the hot wires whether it trips due to overload or someone shuts it off).

210.4(b) applies only to manually opening a breaker (i.e., to work on the circuit. If a handle-tie is used on two or more breakers for a MWBC, and one circuit trips, the others will stay on.

The only way to do that anymore is to use 2-pole or 3-pole breakers.

It should be noted that the phrase "multi-wire branch circuit" does not necessarily mean you have two or more single phase loads sharing a neutral wire. You could have a single outlet powering a single piece of equipment that requires 120 volt and 240 volt power, and you could supply it with two hot wires and one neutral, and that would be a MWBC. In that circumstance, 210.4 would require the breaker serving the load to simultaneously open (for maintenance purposes) both hot legs, but 240.15(B)(1) would not apply since it is not serving single phase line to neutral loads.
