Could someone please tell me where I can find the code related to the horsepower ratings for single and 3 phase manual starters? I know the a single phase manual starters can start motors up to 1 hp and the 3-phase manual starter up to 10 hp but, I can't find the exact article and code that states this.

Thank you,

Re: Single and 3 phase manual starters

Starter sizes are not part of any "code".

NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) starter sizes were created many years ago to allow HP (not physical) interchangeability between vendors. The NEMA standard did not have to be followed exactly so some manufacturers created partial devices like NEMA Size 1P.

Thank you Jim,

In My Electrical class this was a challange question. We were to report with the code reference to the ratings for these manual switches. Would you say this was a trick question?

If it was worded like that the answer may be in the NEC.

Can you type the question out exactly?

Not saying we will give you the answer but we will help you find it.

Re: Single and 3 phase manual starters

O.K

The questions on the actual test I got correct:

-Single and 3 phase manual starters can be used to start motors up to _____ horsepower.

I answered: up to 1hp for single phase and up to 10hp for three phase starters.

I found these answers in the Electrical Motor Control book written by Rockis and Mazur. My instructor wanted us to find the code reference to back that up. I searched in Articles 430 and 404 and was not satified with the info I found.
