430.53(D) is for motor groups. This is covered in UL508a 31.4.I don't know UL508 as well as NFPA 70, but I think he means NEC 430.53, not 52.
This is an area where it's important to distinguish between short-circuit and ground-fault protection and overload protection. Basically, one MCP can feed multiple sets of overloads - with listings and caveats etc. etc.
