Single Phase Generator on 3phase service

I am installing a standby generator for some servers, the service is 208/120V all single phase and panel board that the servers are in is single phase and is feed from a three phase panel. To save on cost is it code compliant to install a 240V generator on a 208V service. I have seen them done, but just cuz it is done doesn't make it right? I do have a A/C compressor that is 208 -230 rated single phase. No loads are three phase. can this be done?

Thanks
Kurt

Why do you have a three phase panel supplied by a single phase service?

In general, I don't think there's anything wrong with what you propose, as long as you pay close attention to any potentially sensitive line-to-line loads.

sorry should clarify, it is a three phase service, originally to the building then feed to a single phase panel with all the server equipment.

Only problem would be with any line to line loads. Code does not allow a 200 volt motor to operate at 230V (a 240 volt system), nor a 230 volt motor on a 208 volt system

now if the motors are 208 - 230 rated then all is good correct? What is the code articale that states this, I'll do some digging.
