I was wondering in a single phase panel what would you do with the third phase wires going to the breakers as in black, red, blue, blue being the third phase wire? Wouldn't that mess up your number calculations black being one, red being three, and blue being five, or are most single phase panels just in homes where you use romex and there is only black, white and red?

Since there is no "requirement" for phase colors, if I opened a single phase panel and saw that color combination my only concern would be that the wiring was in a method (flex, conduit, etc) that allowed the installer to share three "hot" with one neutral.
(Over the years I have found "strange" things when "industrial" folks wire houses)

We had a local phone company repairman wire his house using scrap phone wire, and yes his house did burn down! Luckily nobody was hurt other than in the pocketbook. We just started having inspections around 8 or 9 years ago, But this happened around 30 years ago.

I guess that is indeed Continuing Education, but that's a pretty steep tuition!
