Got another interesting one.

Meter/Main no distribution. After that it feeds a Kohler ATS, then several panels.

Apparently, the electronics in the ATS keep burning out. They want a whole house SPD.

Unfortunately, in the main panel is a 200A main disco, no distribution, no slots for breakers.

Fist useable OCPD for an SPD would be in one of the sub panels after the ATS, and we want to put it before.

I found some Type 1 SPDs made by Eaton that it appears do to need an OCPD, and they are seated for line side of the service entrance, but I've only found them in 3 phase.

I could do a panel change, and install a new 8 space CH panel that has feed-through lugs. That'll probably be my best option.

I don't know as much as I wish I did about SPDs, so what if I did a small panel next the main, say a little 2/4 panel, and put the SPD in there. Does it matter if the panel is "adjacent", electrically, to the main, or would I need the main feed to go through that panel for it to be effective? The SPDs are parallel to the feeders anyway, would it matter if it was in a separate panel?

Nec allows you to put them in each main panel so that's an option but can you move 4 or so circuits to the sub panel and use the space for a spd and the feeder to the subpanel. Type one doesn't need a breaker either you could tap one of those directly into the feeder by the Ats. The eaton smaller panel mount ones I think are type 1 and 2 but I've always used them as type 2.

I have been using a service level SPD that can go directly onto the main feeder termination with the use of the UL listed device supplied.
PSP Product H-100 or the H-Gen for 1P services.

Main panel doesn't have any slots. Main only, no distribution.

No breakers in the ATS either.

First spot with OCPDs is a sub panel downstream from both the main and the ATS.

Looks like a Type 1 is what I need. I can just come off the line side of the 200A main.

Like this one here: Says it works on 3 phase or split phase:

The H-100 doesn't need a breaker although it can be used with one. MFG provide a termination that can be used directly under the existing Feeder terminal with the listed connector place in with the feeder. Can go ahead of the main breaker or after.
It is rated with 200KAIC protection.
Main panel doesn't have any slots. Main only, no distribution.
Don't need anything other than the main. It comes with a UL listed device to allow a tap under the feed through terminals with the feed trough conductor. This is a Type 1 SPD
No breakers in the ATS either.
Again can go under the feeder.

Big selling point I use with my customers is the excellent warrenty, and Made in America. If you need higher AIC they have them too.

Looks perfect.

Can't find any for sale though.
