Hypothetical question. can i install a square d split buss panel in a new house, is it permissible by nec ?

I'm pretty sure those were outlawed by the NEC decades ago. Can't look up the code reference right now but someone may chime in.

Not as the service disconnecting means. Split bus panels have been prohibited by NEC for some time now for this purpose.

I think wording used to be more obvious but now about all I can find is last sentence in 408.36 exception 1. It allows more than one overcurrent device to be the "mains" but does not allow one of them to feed a separate bus section in the same panel.

Add: 2020 NEC the more than one main in same panelboard is going bye bye.

PER 2011 code article 408.33 exception 3 existing split bus panels are permissible .

New house you brought up in OP is not existing.

Exception is there to allow those that were compliant when installed to remain. If you make any upgrade you can't put another split bus panel back in there. would need to be an old one if you wanted to install it they stopped making them because with code prohibiting them there is no demand for them.

Georgia Power had a lot of those in Atlanta, Ga. appeared to be around the early 70's? Pain in the butt when adding an automatic generator! Panel label said "Property of Georgia Power"
