Sizing a meter base?

How can I "calculate" the correct size for a meter base needed (required) from the electric distributor.

When I say calculate - the meter bases only come in a few sizes -

200, 400, and 600.

What information tells what size meter base to request?

Where does one get load data? or is this applicable?
