I have manufacturer info on an elevator to be installed in a building we are doing the electrical design for. The cut sheet says the "Motor controller nameplate current rating" = 42A and the "Accelerating current" = 59A. Which do I use to determine the feeder size and OC protection for this elevator?

I would use the motor horsepower rating, assuming a 3 phase ac motor, look at table 430.250 (2008 NEC) for the FLC, then go to table 430.52 to size your breaker or fuse. You will use the percentage listed depending on what type OCP you are using as a multiplier, then round up to the next size larger based on the sizes listed in table 240.6. You may find that the breaker is as large as 100 amps or even larger. Also you will still size your conductors based on the FLC x 125%. I hope that helps.
