Sizing junction box for SER

How does one size (both side to side and volume) a junction box to splice two or more three wire SER cables used as a feeder conductor for wire sizes #4 AWG and larger?

It's simple when using conduit but I cannot find a reference for non-conduit applications.

What section(s) of the 2008 NEC covers this?
