See Art 400.4 for particulars, but, in general:

SJ is Junior Hard Service, 300 volt, Not Oil Resistant

SO is "Hard Service" 600 volt Thermoset insulation, Extra Hard Usage, Oil resistant

SJ (noone really makes SJ anymore -its all SJOW / SJOOW) is listed as 'hard usage' 300v
SO (really SOOW) is listed as 'extra hard usage' 600v.

The cord without the J has a thicker jacket. For example 520 requires 'extra hard usage' cord in theaters.
