Fire stopping is another set of codes outside the NEC - UBC,IBC or whatever is applicable to your AHJ...

But they differ little, enforcemnt is another story...

Yeah - so anyway floor to floor penetrations, rated walls, rated floors, rated assembelies etc. they are all treated differently... All of them have UL (or other) listed assembelies and methods. The walls themselves are listed assembelies...

Each will have a sheet listing how and where and on what it can be used - good thing to have a copy of it available on site or job file if questioned by your AHJ...

Example(s):

Instructions are good to have around too.

The plans should identify the UL assembly to be used then you need to follow the details for that assembly.
Not alot of plans will show - or even identify rated assembelies unless the AHJ has required it to be done and/or submitted.

Even though I am most often just handed the E sheets alone... Many times you would be hard pressed to locate in the rest of it. Certain places are more on the ball about requiring that information than others, and some base it only on the rating of the building - requiring that info of some, but not others... Commercial but ignore residential... :roll:

We always have a full set (typically numerous sets) of plans and specs on a job and the rated walls will have a UL design number on the A drawings. The PM&E drawings will give UL through penetration assemblies to be used with an "or equal" note.

This is a tough ? !, the quickest answer is to get the AHJ involved , ask them because it will get into the Building Code as to what type the Class of building it is.

It can also get into regional action of both California and NY. that have their own requirements.

I found this nice graphic and literal explanation from a major manufacture of fire stop products. It' gives alot of Spec'd and detailed listings. HERE. This is only for the fire stop plug but I feel w/PDF viewable usage one can quickly grasp the needed requirements that might be needed.

Hope this helps!
