I found some slotted octagon boxes on line that fit over a grid ceiling. Anyone know if they are ok with NEC? I'm hanging some long linear lights from the grid ceiling (they are secured with airline cable above the grid) and would like to run the factory cord through the supplied canopy cover, into the slotted box and make a splice. I'm guessing the answer is no because part if the grid will be in the box along with the wire and wirenuts.

I take a normal octagon box and bolt it to the slotted box and connect two knockouts with a black bushing. That way you can run the cord through the slotted box and wire it above in the normal octagon box.

Our inspector was cool with it
