Small Bushing Usage

Example, two boxes tight side by side, box mounted on an appliance (furnace) with wires going inside, track light live end to ceiling box, strip Lights mounted end to end in a continuous row.

In these and similar cases is a 1/2in bushing required. The wires are not exposed and in most cases the metal is thick enough not to act like a knife.

I think for the cost, why not just use one but what do you think?
 
The threaded end of a rigid conduit should be bushed, but fittings such as connectors and chase nipples need not be.
