I have an industrial control panel that has some control and power wiring to interface with an external electrically operated valve assembly. The valve is powered from 120VAC (sourced from this ICP) and the valve has a rated current of only 1.12A.

I have often seen a 16 or 18awg cable used from the panel to the valve for something like this. Digging around myself, it looks like this is acceptable based on some things like 240.4(D) and 430.22(G)(1), but it's not quite as straight forward as I'd like it to be. I don't know that I've seen where it is expressly permitted or prohibited.

Is it code compliant to have an 18awg cable supply the 120VAC power from the ICP to the valve?

Assume a max of 5A class CC fuse inside the ICP to comply with 240.4(D)(1).

I know it will work, and that there are also rules of thumb that say it should be at least 14awg for any power wiring, but I'm looking for strictly code compliance.

Thank you in advance.
