I have a client asking for metering of KWH on each of his 60A subpanels. Such metering involves installing a pair of magnetic current sensors (current transformers) onto the feed cable, usually a split core type of clamp device that just snaps on around the insulated conductor. A low voltage cable extends from each sensor, out of the panel and ultimately to a nearby wall mounted instrument. My question is, what are the appropriate safety ratings or certifications necessary on these sensors before they are allowed into the panel? If anyone can point me to the correct reference, I would appreciate the help.

The work you describe should be done by an electrician. Like posted emon sub meters are the best Ive used. Not only do you have to put the amprobes around the conductors, you have to feed the sub meter with line voltage.

not to mention the dangerous voltage present on open CT leads....

I too would recommend e-mon. I am installing a couple the first of next week and don't know of another I would rather use. As far as your question: "what are the appropriate safety ratings or certifications necessary on these sensors before they are allowed into the panel?"
I'm not sure what exactly you're asking here. The "ratings and certifications" are no doubt attained by the manufacturer (ul listing and the like) in order to sell the product in the first place. It sounds like you may be interested in making your own little contraption. No?

Theres the first problem; if you're putting wire in a panel in any way, shape of form then it has to be rated for the highest voltage in the panel.

OK, that is very good to know. Thanks.

Yes, I'm considering piecing a solution together from various suppliers, otherwise I could indeed just rely on the meter manufacturer's approvals.
