I am doing a low voltage lighting transformer replacement as well as the outlet, timer setup and pond pump. The previous installer ran romex underground to a magnetic tranformer that controlled 2-12 volt ground lights. This setup, as well as the quad, gfi, bubblecover, timer and associated cords were burned into a pile of goo which also started the trees and most of the yard on fire. This was about 20 ft from the house.
I can only guess why it happened, but the transformer was not fused as well as using regular romex for direct burial didn't help.
My question is this:
It is difficult to run a line back to the panel, if the loads permit is it permissible to obtain my 120v from any branch circuit or does it need to be dedicated back to the panel for this outside application?
