Today I surveyed an existing building in NYC that I am being told by the Architect is Occupancy Type C for Retail. This has yet to be confirmed. I have never performed work on such a building. The building will be a very small retail establishment (2700sf) that will have fewer than 50 people at a time. I have a few questions:
1.) Is a Fire Alarm system probably required for such a building? We would normally not install a system for a business with fewer than 500 people.
2.) Is a dedicated electrical room required where the service comes in at the basement level? There is a service switch and two 225A panelboards and that's it. I believe the public will be in the vicinity of the service.
3.) There is a VERY old current transformer for the utility meter that is being used currently. Is there any reason the tenant should replace this if it works?
Thank you for your help! Much appreciated! I have searching through codes and cannot come up with answers.
