How does the smart modules work for a heat pump/AC unit? Do you need (2) smart modules, one for the air handler with the heat strips and one for the outdoor unit? Both units work together and wondering how to shed the heat strips when needed using a smaller generator using the smart modules.

What if you shed the lv controlling the heat strips. You could do the same with the out side unit. Then bring in outside unit first. Hopefully an out door air temp sensor.

Yes, you would need separate indoor & outdoor modules. They require 240v to operate, so you can’t break the t-stat line with a smart module.

I assume you are referring to Generac also. If so, the transfer switch does have dry contacts built-in that can be used for breaking the LV control circuit.

Yes, that was in reference to Generac. And the one I'm installing on Wednesday doesn't need the modules for heat as it's ac with gas heat. I am installing a smart module for their hot tub. But I've looked at a few that have 10 kw of heat on a 60 amp breaker so I assume I could use the smart modules (100 amp for the indoor unit if on a 60 amp breaker) and the 50 amp module on the outdoor unit and have the indoor unit priority 1 and the outdoor unit priority 2?

Idk what I was thinking when I wrote that….. if you shed the indoor electric heat, the outdoor unit won’t receive a signal via the t-stat to turn on. Sorry, it’s beer:30.
