The situation is this: 2 story house with attached garage. Above the garage is a room, seperate from the rest of the 2nd floor, with seperate stairs.
There is a door at the top of the steps.
There is a smoke alarm inside the room, interconnected to the rest.

The question is - is one requied at the top of the steps, outside the door?
If it was a bedroom, I would put one without question, but this is kind of a general purpose room.

edit to add: door is not installed yet.

What's the room called, on the prints? If it's not called a bedroom, I don't see how anyone can make you put a smoke outside that room. These rooms are typically called "bonus room" on the prints. Myself, I wire them like a bedroom, but that's just me.

Don't really know what the room is called on the prints. I just was here today to move an outlet that ended up behind where a kitchen cabinent was going, and took a stroll through. I just happened to notice there was no smoke , and was curious.

That's what I normally do, but if the approved plans call that room anything other than a bedroom, nobody can really make you wire it like a bedroom.

Its just a personal thing, I feel if its got a window and a closet, it will become a bedroom or guest room eventually. If no closet or no window, I treat it like a den, if they remodel, they can upgrade the smokes during that project...

Door at the top of the stairs puts the stairs in the garage where we do not put smokes.
Not necessarily. He said the garage was attached. Those stairs could just as easily start in the house proper. Most bonus room stairways are that way.

The room is over the garage, the stairs are from the laundry room, not the garage. House side of the garage fire door.

That's what I get for asumeing. But if it doesn't say bedroom on the print, than no smoke.
