Smoke alarms and attic fans

My friend has a customer that would like his thru-the-roof attic fan to shut off when his smoke alarms go off. (Standard residential smokes)

I'm thinking a contactor connected to the smoke alarm interconnect would be the way to go, but I don't know the voltage of the interconnect wire. I also don't know if it is legal.

Or, if someone here has any suggestions or ideas, I would welcome them.

John I am not sure you can do that but I would check with the manufacturer of the SD to see. My bet is no good. What would you use the neutral from the high voltage and the low voltage orange wire? :confused:
 
Check with the smoke alarm manufacture. Some smoke alarms can be equipped with a relay that can be used to switch a control circuit to shut down other equipment.

I know that Firex has some relays you can connect to the their smoke alarm devices.

As I recall, the interconnect uses the neutral as well. (red/white for interconnect)

I don't know of any code that would prohibit the use of a smoke alarm relay to shut off an attic fan.

Gentex has smoke alarms with built in relays for this non-required application. FireX, BRK and a few others have an add on relay.

You should always keep all smoke alarms the same brand and only use a relay made and listed for that particular detector. I have seen FireX relays affect the sounders on BRK smoke alarms.
