Usually your building code will have some specs and then cite NFPA72.
And local amendments are pretty popular on the subject too.

I do not have a link but you may want to look in the International Residential Code section R314. WV adopted the 2009 IRC and that is what we use.

most alarms also have fairly specific instructions accompanying them (or is that detectors?).
