It a building code requirement that a room off a hallway from a bedroom where it's ceiling is 24 inches or more in height than the hallway a smoke alarm be installed in the hallway and in the room with the elevated ceiling. Is there any where the NEC would say the same thing? Most electrical contractors know that is required but new electrican's want to see this in the elecrtical code. What is done with this installation in your areas?

Re: Smoke alarms

This sound's like a local issue as general requirments are one on each level one in each bedroom and one just outside each bedroom area. there are other issues like how far from R/A's, wall's, how close to the top and bottom of the stairway. But there is no requirment's in the NEC on smokes, You should find them in your local building codes though. and they are differant from one location to the next.
