I have a question about multiple station smoke alarms in residential houses. I seem to remember smokes being required within 8' of a bedroom, I know the NFPA requires one within 15' but is there an NEC or Comm16 Code I'm missing? Small wager on the line.

This is a building code issue. The requirements for placement of smoke alarms is not found in the NEC.

Lacking local requirements, I would follow the guidelines provided in the instructions of the alarm, as they are taken directly from 72 anyway.

I am aware of no requirement to have a smoke alarm within 8' of a dwelling unit bedroom. Within 15' is the only one I am aware of.

Any possibility of some local amendment?

The exact wording in NFPA 72 -11.5.1.1 is "outside of each separate sleeping area, in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping rooms." That is obviously open to interpretation as far as distance goes.
