Smoke at the outlet

Wanted some opinions on this one. I'm out of town staying with family, and while using my netbook AC power cord, some smoke begins rising from the receptacle. This cord was recently purchased, but it is an after market universal one, and unlike my original one, is only two prong (no ground). Although I've noticed that the transformer brick has been getting unusually hotter than I would consider normal. So, throw the cord in the garbage or tear the outlet apart and check for loose connections? A oscillating fan has been plugged into the same outlet for some time without issues?

Sounds like the universal AC power supply you purchased is not the correct voltage and or current for the lap top, the smoke you probley seeing is comming from this power supply and not the receptacle, you should always use the correct power supply designed for the equipment they power, voltage out and current they can handle is very important, if the voltage is too high you can fry the laptop, if the current is too low it can fry the power supply.

My dell requires a 19.5 volt DC at 3.34 amps if it has no battery in it, but if its charging a battery then it requires19.5 volt 4.6 amps or a 90 watt PS. and thats what it gets.

P.S. the above is the output DC voltage and amps, not the AC input.

I've seen the same thing, it's likely the Power supply or cord. Had someone plug in a laptop and it shorted and poped the breaker. Checked everything and all was fine. Still a mystery but probably the chinese ps
