Does anyone know of any legal document, guideline, code, etc stating that smoke damaged wiring and electrical equipment has to be tested or replaced? I have an instance in a residence where a heating system failed exposing the wiring to smoke and soot. No physical damage is visible and there was not any type of fire that was exposed to the residence? The local inspectors are a little confused and I can't prove them right or wrong.

I don't know of anything off the top of my head. The problem with smoke is that it has carbon in it and can be conductive. Getting everything clean can be a real problem.

If wires are replaced and area cleaned i see no problem. Cleaning wires might come down to what you used that is legal.

I asked NEMA a similiar question awhile back and was told that they didn't have anything on it. I tried to convince them to put out a white paper on the subject, and they said they would consider it, as they have had several requests for this information.
