smoke dector vaulted ceiling witth fan

Smoke detectors are allowed on vertical walls at least 12" down from the ceiling. Put the detector too close to the ceiling & it won't see the smoke. This is a building code issue & not a NEC issue...but we can guide you in the right direction from personal experience.

Code say within 3' of the peak but what about if there is a ceiling fan in the peak? Doesn't it have to be 3' for the blade?

Are you dealing with 120VAC or battery-powered smoke alarms or low voltage system smoke detectors?

They are hard wired. Inspector failed it. In a vaulted ceiling code say 36" from peak but what about the ceiling fan in the peak?

With a vaulted ceiling, I imagine a high ceiling 12ft or 14ft or more. In such a situation does a fan down rod putting the fan blades at 9ft above finished floor provide any relief ?

What code are you talking about, NFPA 72? Most smoke detectors come with placement instructions that reflect that code.

FWIW I don't know of a "3' from the peak" rule. It is more complicated than that and has to do with the pitch and the vertical distance from the peak.

At the gable end, mark a spot 4" down from the peak, and another 36" down. Draw a line (real or imaginary) all around the room at the 4" and 36" level. The smoke alarm(s) can be anywhere on the slope of the ceiling between these two lines. If the room is 900 sq ft or less, you need only one (1). You do need to be 36" away from the fan. If this is new construction and you're not pushing the 12 smoke alarm limit, place an alarm on either side of the fan and call it a day.
