When measuring box location for wall mounted smoke detectors, is the 4" to ceiling rule, to the center of the box or to the edge of the detector itself?

When measuring box location for wall mounted smoke detectors, is the 4" to ceiling rule, to the center of the box or to the edge of the detector itself?

I believe it is 4" to edge. It certainly can't hurt to be more than 4" but less than 12" (if I remember correctly). Don't forget to add in the sheetrock on new construction
