wiring a 340 sq ft room addition consisting of a bedroom & "sitting" room separated by a door. Bedroom has doorway to sitting room and doorway to existing residence. Existing residence only has battery smoke detectors. Putting hardwired SD in addition. will I be required to install an interconnected alarm outside bedroom in the existing residence. How about the adjorning sitting room.

this is a building code issue ,.. In Mass when a bedroom is added the whole house must be brought into compliance.

It's also a building code, not NEC, issue in the State of Minnesota.

The State says that the exisiting, un-altered building is allowed to be battery operated only. The addition is battery backup line powered. At least one CO detector must be installed outside the beds, as well, and if that is in existing house, then it only needs battery power.

There are local exceptions that alter this if the property is rented, or multi-unit.

So, you see from this and other posts, the only way you will get an answer is to find out what ordinances apply to the dwelling you are involved with.
