Hello,

I know that we need to provide one smoke detector in the bedroom per NFPA 72 but as far as the location does it need to be within 3' of the opening door?

No. The more centrally located in the room it is, the better. Stay 36 inches away from supply or return registers and the tip of any ceiling fans.

It needs to at the heights point of the room. It also can be on a wall but with 6" or so-- the direction for the sd will tell you those dimensions. Usually we put them centered on the door about 12" off the wall

Is that because you always have, or is there some local requirement?

That's where we put them as well.

If you put it on the wall you should located at least a foot from the ceiling otherwise you could get smoke rollover

In order to install smoke detectors correctly, you need to have a minimal knowledge of the building codes.

IN GENERAL, ...they need to be installed inside and outside of all sleeping rooms; must be powered by building electric; must have battery backup; must be interconnected; do not install in dead air space (see instructions); you probably also need CO alarm (they make combo units that aren't that much $ more); do not install within 3-foot of a supply register; do not install within 3-foot of a return; do not install within 3-foot of the end of ceiling fan; do see the manufacturer's instructions that come in the box...

I would certainly refer to your AHJ, Seattle and Washington State have good documentation that I easily pulled up with a Google search.

We have occasionally used wirelessly communicating ones for remodels where were can't get a wire between.

There's also recommendations (just learned this one) not to install them on a ceiling where the space above the ceiling is outside and there is little to no insulation in the ceiling.

That's "within a foot of the ceiling", per NFPA 17.7.3.2.1. As of the 2010 edition. Also, as of that edition there is no restriction on location on the ceiling. Previously you couldn't be within 4 inches of the wall.
