I've got a outdoor Butler type building with a couple of switchboards, an MTS and a MCC. I don't believe I need any fire alarm devices. Would you agree?

Its not an NEC requirment for what fire alarm devices get installed, but the NEC covers the wiring for the devices

I'll admit, I'm not sure what a "Butler" building is, but your likely correct.

The 1st place to look is the local building codes. Not sure if your on the ICC codes, but if so, it's likely a Group F occupancy. Group F doesn't require manual or automatic fire alarm systems unless you're more than 2 stories, or occupancy load of more than 500 (see IFC Chapter 9).

Butler is just one brand of prefabricated metal buildings. I used to work with a guy who always referred to them that way and it stuck. Thanks for the input.

Unsure if this is what your asking, but FA notification device requirements are defined by the classification and occupancy thresholds. I dont recall the exact IBC/IFC section off the top of my head, but what’s the classification and occupancy of your building? From there we can say if it’s code required. There’s nothing stopping you from exceeding minimum code requirements though...

ETA: IBC section 907.2 Where required

If IBC is your local building code, this is probably a Group B occupancy. I'll bet you a dollar the occupancy load is under 500 people and less than 100 above or below the lowest level of exit discharge. So no, not required (unless the owner wants it anyway.)

See IBC section 907.2.2.

Butler is one of the first PEMB manufacturers in the US. Our farm shop is a Butler building built in the early 60’s, and some of our grain silos are too.

I’d say 90% of the metal buildings on farms around here are Butler, and probably half the grain silos.
