I put them up in the corner of the room so they sit against the ceiling and both walls at the same time. This way they last longer with all of the dead air space. ;)

NFPA 72 will tell you where you can put them. if I recall correctly, they have to be between 4" and 12" down from the ceiling for the way smoke curls in a room, during a fire.

Smoke Detector Location

Within 3' of bedroom doors.
Also have to take in consideration other items, such as AC/heat registers, return ar vents, ceiling fans if they are present. Have to stay far enough away from them too.

Choked! Thinking Common occupany hal ways...Ceiling is okay in dwelling, and needs to consider what can affect the flow of the air in the vicinity ofthe detector.

I for one would like to know for sure where the sd's should be located. I have made some calls to the building dept and the fire martial, best answer so far... "follow the manufacturer's instructions". Okay.

FWIW, the local tradition is to put a smoke inside each bedroom, on the ceiling, about a foot or two from the door header. (If the ceiling is raised, vaulted, coffer, or whatever, we put the smoke on the highest level). Also, a smoke has to go outside of the bedroom(s). If there is a common hall, one smoke will cover all the bedrooms in that hall. Also, it all the bedrooms are upstairs on a two story house, a smoke has to be added downstairs. Of course, all smokes are to be interconnected and battery/120v

I have never failed an inspection because of smokes improperly located, but there could always be a first.

Is that about how you install them?
