Smoke Detectors in Dwellings

I was told today that I can not use a single gand nail on box in a ceiling for smoke detectors, I know that if I was putting luminares that it requires an 8-32 screw anyone know if this is correct and if so where it is in the code book.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.:)

Who ever told you that is mistaken.

314.27(E) exception, permits a ceiling mounted device box to support utilization equipment that does not exceed 6 pounds provided that you use 2 #6 or larger screws.

(E) Utilization Equipment. Boxes used for the support of utilization equipment other than ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans shall meet the requirements of 314.27(A) and (B) for the support of a luminaire that is the same size and weight.
Exception: Utilization equipment weighing not more than 3 kg (6 lb) shall be permitted to be supported on other boxes or plaster rings that are secured to other boxes, provided the equipment or its supporting yoke is secured to the box with no fewer than two No. 6 or larger screws.

If you couldn't use those boxes I would think that the smoke alarm would have mounting holes that didn't line up with a SG box.
