I've got a 4 story, non-high rise private high school. The entire facility is sprinkled. This is in Mass, and per the E Catagory in the Mass Building Code, I'm telling a contractor that smoke detectors are not required in the facility at all. I'm not stating that this is the recommendation necessarily but strictly speaking the code doesn't require them.

I'm getting pushed back that in NFPA 72, any egress stairwell, requires smokes at the top and the bottom.

I know many of you can't comment on MA, but just your input on 72 would be helpful.

Thanks,

Mike

I don't see anything in NFPA 72 that says smoke detectors are required in stairwells.

In general NFPA 72 doesn't tell you when smoke detectors are required. It just lists spacing for detectors if another code requires complete coverage.

I am unaware of any NFPA 72 requirement for smokes in stairwells. Can you quote the section. The only thing I can think of might be for door release service. I do alot of educational work and usually the only smokes I have are for duct detectors, door magnets, elevators and at panels
