So we have 3 apt bldgs (2 story 10 units each)...we roughed the smoke detectors within 3' of "return air transfer grilles" that are above the doors of the bedrooms. I have looked and from what I've been able to find (NFPA72 11.8.3.5(6)&(7)) the only proximity issues are for supply registers and Ceiling Fans. Does anyone have any other references that specifically mention returns?

As always, check instructions on the smoke detectors that are to be installed. I know, if you do not provide them, get something in writing from who will, as to the brand & model so that you can check on this.

I did a house in the country where the owner had his own inspector (for entire job). He had me add a smoke detector & move a wall mount one up 9". Then later told builder that it needed to be moved down 2". The owner then told the builder that the inspector was not going to be coming back.

Check the (2013) NFPA 72 annex for A.17.7.4.1 Although it is the annex, it does mention not being closer than 36" to a return air opening.
