Smoke Detectors

I am building a home in the state of West Virginia. I had a FHA inspector come out yesterday and do an Inspection. He said I had to have a smoke detector in each bedroom (ok I agree), but then he said I had to have one outside each bedroom also. This would give me 3 detectors in the hall way. I think this is over kill.

Re: Smoke Detectors

I believe what the inspector meant was that you will need one (1) smoke detector in the common hallway area outside the bedrooms. If it's a large home and if the master bedroom is separated from the other bedrooms by a long hallway they'll probably require one at each end of the hallway.

Re: Smoke Detectors

Here in central Illinois, we are required to install a smoke detector in each bedroom, a smoke within 15' of each sleeping area, and a smoke on every level of the house. They must all be interconnected and have battery back up.

Re: Smoke Detectors

You guys are all nearly verbatum on the IRC requirement for smokes, which is one in each sleeping room, one outside of each sleeping room and one one each level. As stated before, the smoke outside the sleeping room can serve multiple sleeping rooms and can satisfy the one per level requirement.
