In a 2 family dwelling, do all smoke detectors have to be interconnected or does each floor have there own circuit and the common area (hall area or entrance) have its own circuit? Or is it interconnected with each floor? What is the ruling on this. And I know each bedroom, and basement gets a smoke, but does dining and living rooms get one?

In a single or multi dwelling unit (Group R2 or R3) housing. All smoke detectors are required to be interconnected. In order to active all detector alarms whenever a detector is alarm is activated. Smoke detectors are required to be installed in all bedrooms, in the vicinity of all bedrooms (outside the doors) and on every level of the dwelling unit. Also, the detectors should not be connected to one a separate circuit that could be turned "off" at overcorrect protection device at the panelboard. connect the smoke detectors into the nearest receptacle of light fixture wired "hot".

Are you saying you have a code requiring all smoke detectors in different units to be tied together.
I'd hate to be asleep in the first floor east when the guy in the third floor west decided to test his smokes.
The smokes also would have to be tied to the AFCI circuit because they are in the bedrooms.(2002NEC)
