HOW FAR AWAY CAN A SMOKE DETECTOR BE TO STILL SERVE A BEDROOM

Here in vt we are req to install the smokes in every bedroom and outside the bedroom.I am not aware of any spec for distance away from the bedroom.If outside the bedroom is a hallway i would say any place within that hall would be fine.I would check with your local inspector about this.There may be info in NFPA 78 .Also the spec sheet that comes with the smokes are very helpful.We are also req to interconnect them all and have battery back-up.

let me clear up one item, If there are 3 bedrooms connected to a common hallway than 1 smokes should be ok to cover all 3 bedrooms.If one of the bedrooms is located at the end of the hall from the others than 2 may be needed depending on the length of the hall.

Here in Colorado, we Use the Uniform Building Code requiring a smoke INSIDE all bedrooms, OUTSIDE all bedrooms, and on each floor. They must be interconnected and, have a battery backup.
Even a very small house might end up with 5 or 6 smokes under the UBC code.

here, the hallway smokes must be within 10 feet of a bedroom. So, many times we will have 2 in the second floor hallway. All smokes must be no closer than 3ft. to a cold air return.

Does anyone look at the manufactures instruction's?
One in every bedroom
one outside sleeping areas
one on each full floor(the one that is in the hall-way can serve as this one)
and even one on a half floor if it has doors that can be shut just look on a box it even has a diagram to follow.

We Have to:
110.3 Examination, Identification, Installation, and Use of Equipment.
(B) Installation and Use. Listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.

That type of instruction is not a "listing and labeling instruction" and 110.3(B) does not require that you make installations according to manufacturer's recommendations. That instruction is a marketing device designed to increase the profit for the manufacturer. That being said there are some codes that require the same thing as the manufacturer's instructions and if these codes apply in your area, then the code rule must be complied with.

NFPA 72 Section 2-2.1.1.1 Smaoke alarms shall be installed outside of each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the family dwelling unit, including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics. In new construction a smoke alarm shall also be installed in each sleeping room.
