Where do I find info on smoke detectors in the code book. Smoke detectors are not listed in the index. I am looking for measurements from ceiling min. or max from ceiling.

Try 110.3(B), which will tell you to look at the manufacturer's listing.

Also, section R317 of the IRC states that smokes must be installed in compliance with the NFPA 72, but I'm not sure if the 72 addresses your question.

When all else fails, read the directions.

There is no NEC requirement that smoke detectors (or CO detectors for that matter) need to be installed. So, other than general wiring requirements you won't find anything.

They fall under NFPA and local requirements which would dictate the locations required. The measurements you are looking for would be best found in the manufacturers literature.

Ryan is correct that it is found in NFPA 72 chapter 11. (11.8.3....)

I don't have the book here at home.
