I have a bedroom and the ceiling has different levels I do not have room to clear the ceiling fan on the higher level and the Inspector had us put the Smoke Detector on the lower level to get the required space away from the ceiling fan.Any thoughts?

I assume you are referring to a "tray-style" ceiling. Review section 11.8.3 of the NFPA 72.

It is recommended that the alarm be installed on the highest level however if other restrictions prevent that placement, it can be installed on the vertical rise no closer than 4" to the ceiling but no farther than 12".

In some cases where the room is small, no location can meet all the requirements for smoke alarm placement. In this case, compromise must be made in cooperation with your AHJ.

I have never heard of any clearance requirements for other than forced air ducts and would be interested in the reference for ceiling fan clearance.

Along with forced air vents we have to have 36 in of horizontal clearance from a bathroom door that have a vent fan.Since all bathrooms here must have a bath fan regardless if there is a window, that means all bathroom doors.I also have never heard of a ceiling fan restriction.

The current NFPA 72 code requires the single station smoke detector to be at least 36" away from the door to a bathroom that contains a tub or shower. It says nothing about a bath fan. (See 11.8.3.5(5) of NFPA 72)

I also have never heard of a ceiling fan restriction.

Take a look at NFPA 72 11.8.3.5(7). This section requires that a single station smoke detector be installed at least 36" away from the tip of the blade of a ceiling fan.

The 36 ins from a bathroom door became a building dept requirement when the requirement for a bathroom here to have a fan installed regardless of if there is a window in the bathroom. So we have to stay 36 ins away from any bathroom door, can be tricky when there is a pocket door in a hall that seperates the bedrooms/bathroom from a family room and there is a return air vent in the small hall area.

I guess our inspectors havn`t read the required 36 ins. from a ceiling fan regulation.
